Dear Colleagues,

We are glad to invite you to join us for the first Phonon Lifetime Workshop, which will be held in Lyon on the 19th and 20th of December, 2019 (https://phonon-lifetime.sciencesconf.org/)

The workshop, "Phonon lifetime from disordered to complex systems: Measurement and Interpretation", focuses on the challenge of experimentally resolving and understanding acoustic phonon lifetimes in a variety of materials, from disordered to complex crystalline systems. This challenge is then put in perspective with the understanding of thermal transport, for which phonon lifetime represents a still missing key parameter.

The purpose of the workshop is thus to gather world renowned experts of the different experimental techniques (inelastic X ray, neutron scattering, optical and X ray pump probe techniques) used today for measuring phonon energy and –when accessible – phonon lifetime, in order to point at the actual limits and ways of progress to solve this experimental challenge. On the other side, the workshop will gather as well world-renowned theoreticians working on the interpretation of phonon lifetime, the understanding of its dependence on energy and temperature depending on the phonon scattering process responsible for its shortening and anharmonicity, and its connection to thermal transport.

Registrations are open until the 18th of December.

Abstracts for contributing oral presentations of new work related to phonon lifetime or anharmonicity can be sent by mail  December 1rst to : phonon-lifetime@sciencesconf.org

Looking forward to meeting you in Lyon,

Valentina Giordano and Stéphane Pailhès
